Science

At Widden Primary School, children aspire to dream big and see the possibilities within Science. We show them that Science can lead to exciting careers and opportunities.

Our Science curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, enabling children to work scientifically, and cultivate a lifelong passion for understanding the natural world. We believe that science education is fundamental to empowering children to make sense of the world around them, to become responsible global citizens, and to thrive in an increasingly technological society.

Achieve

Our Science curriculum is designed to inspire children to achieve their full potential in the world of science, demonstrating a solid grasp of key scientific concepts. Children build on prior knowledge and make connections within their learning. Children cultivate a deep understanding of working scientifically, empowering children to develop the skills and mindset they need to approach scientific enquiries and understand the world around them.

Resilience

We nurture resilience by encouraging children to ask questions, test their ideas, learn from mistakes and overcome challenges. Through practical investigations, problem solving tasks and collaborative learning children develop the confidence to approach scientific challenges with a growth mindset.

Progressive

Our Science curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression from Early Years to Year Six through substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills. Each stage builds upon prior knowledge allowing children to develop a deeper understanding of key scientific concepts.

Community

Science is all around us and we make learning relevant to our local community as well as learning about the global scientific community. As a school we engage with local STEM ambassadors to deepen their understanding of life as a scientist linked to their current learning. This ignites a curiosity and interest in Science, opening the possibilities to consider a future career in Science.

Diversity

We celebrate the contributions of Scientists from all backgrounds and cultures to ensure that everyone sees themselves reflected in the subject. Our curriculum highlights historical and contemporary figures from diverse communities ensuring representation and inspiration for all pupils. We actively challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity in Science using resources from Primary Science Teaching Trust.

Equity

Every child deserves access to a high quality Science education, providing support and challenges tailored to their individual needs. Through scaffolding, hands-on experiences and inclusive learning opportunities we ensure that all children regardless of background or ability can succeed and develop a passion for Science.
