Widden Primary School

Year 3

Welcome to Year 3! Your teachers for this year are: Miss Minchin (Dahl Class) and Miss Frost (Rowling Class). Moving into Key Stage 2 is a huge step in their primary school journey and we are ready to build their independence, confidence and create some amazing memories together.

Mathematics

In Term 1, we will focus on the place value of 2-digit and 3-digit numbers, learning to compare, order and estimate them. Moving into Term 2, our focus shifts to addition and subtraction. Throughout both terms, we will strengthen fluency and number sense through subitising, partitioning, fact families (like bonds to 10), doubles/near doubles and number neighbours.

Reading and Writing

Our core writing texts will be The Green Ship (Term 1) and Frankenstiltskin and The Mischevians (Term 2). For whole-class reading, we will explore wonderful titles including The Iron Man, The Worst Class in the World, Mayor Bunny's Chocolate Town, Wolf Brother, Varjak Paw, Leonora Bolt, The Nothing to See Here Hotel and Jelly Boots,Smelly Boots. Through these texts, children will develop their reading comprehension, make inferences, form predictions and build reading fluency.

Science

We are investigating light and animals, including humans. Children will explore key concepts related to both the natural world and physical properties, looking at light sources, shadows, diets and skeletons.

Humanities

  • History: We will journey back in time to learn about life from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

  • Geography: We will answer our enquiry learning about how land is used in Gloucester and the South West.
