Art
Art and Design

At Widden Primary School, children are encouraged to dream big and recognise the lifelong possibilities that Art can offer. Through rich artistic experiences, we show our children that creativity can lead to exciting careers and meaningful opportunities in the wider world.
Our Art curriculum is designed to equip children with strong creative skills, visual literacy and confidence in using a range of materials and techniques, while embracing digital and contemporary forms of expression. We encourage children to explore ideas, take creative risks and solve problems through imaginative and thoughtful design.
Achieve
Our Art and Design curriculum encourages children to achieve their full creative potential through a strong foundation of artistic knowledge and practical skills that can be applied to real-world contexts. Pupils explore a wide range of techniques, materials and processes while learning about the work and achievements of artists and designers and makers from the local area and around the world who shape our culture.
Resilience
We build resilience through a progressive creative journey that encourages experimentation, reflection and refinement. Children are taught that mistakes are a vital part of the artistic process and that ideas develop through practice and perseverance. By learning about the challenges artists face, pupils understand that adapting and improving their work is essential to achieving high-quality outcomes.
Progressive
Our Art curriculum is carefully sequenced through small steps enabling children to steadily build their skills, confidence and creative understanding. Pupils investigate and evaluate artworks and design pieces before developing focused practical skills. They then plan, create and refine their own work evaluating outcomes to make further progress.
Community
We celebrate the contributions of local and world artists from all cultures and communities ensuring every child sees themselves reflected within the subject. Our curriculum highlights both historical and contemporary creative figures promoting representation and inspiration for all pupils. Topics relating closely to our diverse community are included to reflect the richness of our school.
Diversity
We value diversity by ensuring that a wide range of voices, traditions and cultural influences shape creative learning. Children explore different artistic styles, perspectives and practices helping them to design and create work that is inclusive and meaningful for a wide range of audiences. This nurtures empathy, creativity and respect for difference.
Equity
Through an equitable approach we provide every child with access to high-quality resources guidance and opportunities to succeed regardless of background or ability. We foster a supportive and inclusive environment where every child feels confident to express their ideas, develop skills and see themselves as a capable and valued artist.
