Widden Primary School

History

At Widden Primary School, we aim for children to aspire to various roles, driven by their environment, culture, and the opportunities available to them. Our vision is to inspire a love of history in every child, fostering curiosity and critical thinking by helping them explore diverse historical events, figures, and cultures. Through engaging storytelling, hands-on experiences, and discussions, children will develop an understanding of the world around them and how the past has shaped the present. We aim to cultivate a sense of identity, empathy, and social responsibility, empowering children to appreciate their own heritage and the interconnectedness of global histories.

Achieve

In History, we aim to achieve creativity and inquisitiveness through enquiry-based learning and exploration. We want children of all ages to ask questions and to develop the confidence to think critically and explain and analyse historical evidence by KS2.

Resilience

Resilience in primary history education refers to helping children develop the ability to overcome challenges whilst learning about the past. History, with its many triumphs, struggles, and lessons from adversity, is an excellent subject through which children can understand the importance of resilience—both in historical figures and in themselves.

Progressive

Our History curriculum aims to enable children to meet the end of key stage attainment targets in the national curriculum and beyond. For EYFS, the activities allow children to deepen their understanding of the world Development Matters statements and Early Learning Goals, whilst also covering foundational knowledge that will support them in their further history learning in Key Stage 1.

We develop children's understanding of how historians study the past and construct accounts and the skills to carry out their own historical enquiries. In order to prepare children for their future learning in History, our curriculum aims to introduce them to key substantive concepts including power, invasion, settlement and migration, empire, civilisation, religion, trade, diverse  achievements of humankind, society and culture.

How History links to our school values:

Aspire

At Widden we aim for all children to have aspirations, be them big or small. Studying History allows children to have an understanding of how, when you aspire to achieve, this can be done. This is learnt through studying historical events such as the moon landings to show anything is possible.

Believe

Our history curriculum aims to support children to believe in themselves and their abilities. Through the study of history, and the learning of specific historical skills children will believe in their ability not only to study and achieve in history but in their own lives as well.

Succeed

Succeed is also another important value we have at Widden. Our History curriculum aims to teach children the importance of how children can succeed no matter how small. We aim to do this by teaching children about key individuals, and how they have succeeded against the odds, and show children how practically they can succeed in their studies of history.
