Widden Primary School

PE

At Widden Primary School, children aspire to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Our aspirational curriculum plan champions inclusivity and aims to cultivate physically literate individuals who are equipped with essential movement skills and a lifelong appreciation for health and fitness. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children progress from fundamental motor skills in early years to advanced tactical understanding and teamwork in upper school, ultimately achieving an ability to participate in a broad range of physical activities.

Achieve

Our PE curriculum is meticulously designed to inspire children to achieve their fullest potential in the realm of physical activity, exhibiting a robust understanding of essential movement concepts. Children build upon their prior experiences and draw connections between different physical skills and activities. They cultivate a thorough comprehension of the importance of active participation, empowering them to develop the necessary skills and mind-set required to engage confidently in physical pursuits and appreciate the significance of health and fitness in their lives.

Resilience

Resilience is a pivotal aspect of our PE curriculum. We encourage students to inquire, experiment with their movements, learn from errors, and surmount obstacles they encounter. Through engaging in dynamic physical challenges, problem-solving exercises, and cooperative games, children cultivate the confidence to tackle physical challenges with a growth mind-set. This resilience is critical not only in sport but in their everyday lives, allowing them to approach challenges with determination and perseverance.

Progressive

Our PE curriculum is progressively structured to ensure continuity and development from Early Years through to Year Six, incorporating both substantive and disciplinary knowledge and skills. Each stage of learning builds on prior achievements, allowing children to develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of key physical concepts. This structure is essential in providing a clear pathway for their physical development and ensuring they have the aptitudes necessary to excel. The curriculum encompasses a wide scope, including individual and team sports, dance, and outdoor activities, helping learners to explore their interests and discover new passions. Disciplinary knowledge in our PE curriculum comes through opportunities for the children to choose and apply their own actions, balances, movements and skills. Once they have mastered the specific skills, they have opportunities to apply these within sports and games and therefore have to choose different strategies and the best way to approach different challenges. As they move through school, their skills and knowledge around tactics become more complex and they have to work collaboratively to make decisions.

Community

The role of community in our PE curriculum is emphasised; physical activity is ubiquitous, and we make learning pertinent to our local community while also exploring broader physical culture. Our school engages with local sports clubs, trained sports coaches and athletes to enrich children’s perspectives on physical activity linked to their studies. This engagement fosters a sense of curiosity and propels children to consider future involvement in sports or related careers.

Diversity

We celebrate diversity within our PE curriculum, recognising the contributions of athletes and physical educators from various backgrounds and cultures. Our programme highlights historical and contemporary figures from diverse communities, ensuring representation and inspiration for every child. We actively challenge stereotypes and advocate for inclusivity in physical activities, utilising resources that promote positive role models from varied backgrounds.

Equity

Equity is a fundamental principle of our PE education; every child deserves the opportunity to access a high-quality physical education experience. We provide support and challenges customised to meet individual needs. Through tailored instruction, hands-on experiences, and inclusive learning practices, we ensure that all children, regardless of their background or ability, can achieve success and develop a passion for physical activity.
