Year 6
WELCOME TO YEAR 6!
Year 6 is a huge year for children at Widden Primary School. This year, the children learn to develop their independence further and be more responsible as they begin the final steps of their journey towards secondary school. In the Summer, they will have their SATs but more than that, they benefit from an enriched curriculum. They will learn more about the world around them as well as about themselves and will make great strides in their preparation for the next big step. Year 6 is also a difficult year with lots of changes and some big moments. However, the Year 6 team works hard with all colleagues to ensure the children enjoy a happy and progressive year, which should be full of fun, laughter and responsibility.

Term 6
The children have shown incredible resilience and determination this year, and we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements. In Term 5, they successfully navigated their SATs with focus and maturity – a real testament to their hard work and progress. Now, as we head into Term 6 – The Final Countdown! – our focus shifts to making lasting memories and ensuring the children feel confident and prepared for the exciting transition to secondary school.
This term, all pupils will be taking part in the DiversITy business challenge, developing entrepreneurial and teamwork skills, with a few teams progressing to the final event at the Institute of Technology in Swindon. We’ll continue to work through the remaining areas of the National Curriculum, including Geography, where we will explore map skills and conduct fieldwork in the local area. In D&T, the children will be studying bridge design, applying creativity and problem-solving in practical tasks. We’ll also be preparing a special end-of-year production, giving the children the chance to showcase their musical, artistic and dramatic talents.
Please take a look at our Term 6 topic web for more detailed information about the exciting learning ahead.

Suffragette: The Battle for Equality by David Roberts
This term, we’re using Suffragette: The Battle for Equality by David Roberts as the core text for our writing lessons. Beautifully illustrated and richly informative, this nonfiction book introduces children to the inspiring story of the women’s suffrage movement in Britain.
Through vivid storytelling and powerful visuals, pupils will explore the courage and determination of those who fought for equal rights. The text not only supports our English curriculum but also deepens understanding of key historical and social themes.
We encourage parents to explore the book at home too—it’s a wonderful starting point for meaningful conversations about equality, justice, and standing up for what’s right.
Road's End - by Bri Meyer
Who is this mysterious man in goggles and a red scarf, and what has happened to him?
As the short film Road’s End opens, we’re left to wonder. He’s seen inspecting the wreckage of a car in the middle of a remote desert highway—has he just survived a crash? Help arrives in the form of a seemingly kind driver who offers him a lift.
But soon, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems—both to the viewer and the driver. A chilling moment occurs when the driver glances into the stranger’s goggles and sees his own reflection… but it’s not just a reflection. It’s a disturbing glimpse into the future—and for this unfortunate soul, it’s a future that’s about to come true.
This term, we’ll be using Road’s End as the inspiration for our writing. From exploring suspense and character motives to crafting alternative endings and backstories, this film will serve as a rich springboard for creative and analytical work.
PE
PE sessions take place on Wednesday (swimming) and Friday (athletics).
Children should come to school wearing their PE kit, including suitable footwear (trainers), and make sure that they have a water bottle. There are many opportunities for children in Y6 to represent Widden in sports fixtures throughout the year, we hope that lots of children will enjoy taking part in such events.
Reading
Reading records are to be brought in daily. Please make sure that you are listening to your child read during the week and record this in their books.
Homework
Homework will be given to the children on a Friday. This may include: Maths, Writing/SPaG, and/or topic work. This will need to be completed in the homework books, unless told otherwise. Homework is to be brought back to school the following Wednesday. This is a crucial rehearsal for secondary school, where homework is an important regular occurrence.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
