Term 1
We are so excited for this year already! The last year of primary school is a busy and emotional one but we are ready to make some amazing memories.
In maths, we will focus on place value and our arithmetic skills. We will work on partitioning, ordering and comparing numbers into millions, hundred thousands, tens thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. We will continue to focus on adding and subtracting larger numbers and multiplying and dividing using formal written methods. We will expose children to some SATs style questions in some of our sessions too.
In writing, we are working on our mystery story writing skills and what it takes to keep our readers wanting more. We will use a range of different sentence types to write setting descriptions, stories and diary entries. We will explore a range of figurative language to write ballad poems. We will be using our new book for this term: Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell to inspire us.
The story is about a girl called Feo and her mother. They live in snowy Russia, in a forest away from all other humans. They help tame wolves, that were kept as pets by the Russian aristocrats, to become wild again. She loves her wolves, and they love her. One night, the Russian soldiers take her mother away, Feo goes on a brave journey to rescue her — with her wolves by her side.
In science, we are investigating what makes objects living things. We will then observe and classify living things (organisms) based on their characteristics. We will then look at micro-organisms and how they explore how some can be helpful and some can be unhelpful.
In geography we will be answering the enquiry question ‘Why should the A417 be improved?’ We will use 4 and 6 figure grid references, follow a route on an Ordnance Survey map and identify contour features of Birdlip hill.
In computing, we will focus on computing systems and networks. We will investigate different internet addresses, how information is shared online and understand how to be safe when online.
In RE, we will be exploring the Hindu faith and will be answering the question: how do Hindus see Brahman?
In Spanish, we will be learning how to talk about ourselves in Spanish, ensuring that we pronounce the sounds correctly. We will learn likes and dislikes, favourite school subjects. We will also introduce numbers and some aspects of telling the time.
In Art, we are exploring the work of British sculptor and artist, Henry Moore. We will trial a range of different shading techniques to help our artwork look real. We will explore the human form and proportion to make our sketches of people look real. We will then create a sketch in the style of Moore using the techniques we have learnt.
In PE this term, we are going to be learning skills in football to be able maintain possession when in a game situation. In our fitness lessons, we will develop our speed, stamina and strength, when running, jumping and throwing. The PE days in Y6 this year are: Wednesday and Friday
