Widden Primary School

Music

At Widden Primary School, children aspire to dream big and see the possibilities within Music. We show them that Music can lead to exciting careers and opportunities. Children perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians. Children learn to sing and use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

Children at Widden Primary school learn to understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Achieve

Music at Widden Primary School plays a vital role in developing creativity, confidence, and a love for learning. Achieving in music is not just about singing in tune or playing an instrument correctly—it’s about engaging with rhythm, melody, and expression. Through active participation in singing, playing, listening, and composing, children build essential skills such as teamwork, coordination, and self-expression.

Resilience

Music provides a supportive way of developing a child’s resilience. Music provides opportunities to face challenges such as learning a new instrument, mastering a song, or performing in front of others. Encouraging resilience helps them understand that mistakes are part of learning and that progress comes with practice and patience.

Progressive

The Charanga music programme progresses by gradually building children's skills, starting with foundational concepts like rhythm and pitch and advancing to more complex elements such as music theory, composition, and performance. This progression encourages creativity, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of diverse musical styles, fostering both technical abilities and personal expression.

Community

Our music curriculum is designed to foster a sense of community by encouraging collaboration through group performances, choir participation, and ensemble work. By integrating music from diverse cultures and styles, it also promotes inclusivity, offering all children opportunities to connect and express themselves creatively within a shared musical experience.

Diversity

Diversity within our music curriculum plays a crucial role in exposing children to a wide range of musical traditions, cultures, and perspectives, fostering a greater appreciation for global artistic expressions. By incorporating diverse genres and composers, the curriculum enriches students' understanding of music’s universal language while celebrating cultural differences and promoting inclusivity

Equity

By providing a supportive and inspiring musical curriculum, we support every child to achieve and enjoy music, no matter their ability level.
