Widden Primary School

History

At Widden through our History curriculum, we aim to build an awareness of significant events and individuals in global, British and local history and recognise how things have changed over time. We aim to challenge children by thinking deeply and critically about past events using multiple sources of evidence.

In History we aim to stimulate creativity and inquisitiveness through enquiry based learning and exploration. We want children of all ages to ask questions and to develop confidence to think critically and explain and analyse historical evidence by KS2.

At Widden one of the school values is diversity. At Widden, our history curriculum aims to support children to appreciate the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups and cultures.

Our community is at the heart of what we do and another one of our school values. Studying History allows children to have an understanding of the importance of community and the effects of past historical events on communities from the past and present.

Integrity is also another important value we have at Widden. Our History curriculum teaches children the importance of integrity. We aim to do this by teaching children about key individuals, such as the late Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison fighting for equality and justice for black people.

We hope to develop pupils’ understanding of how historians study the past and construct accounts and the skills to carry out their own historical enquiries. In order to prepare pupils for their future learning in History, our curriculum aims to introduce them to key substantive concepts including power, invasion, settlement and migration, empire, civilisation, religion, trade, diversity achievements of humankind, society and culture.

Our History scheme of work aims to enable pupils to meet the end of Key stage attainment targets in the National curriculum and the aims also align with those set out in the National curriculum. For EYFS, the activities allow pupils to deepen their Understanding of the world, while also covering foundational knowledge that will support them in their further history learning in Key stage 1.
